Collection: PEONIES

POTTED PLANT MATERIAL FROM THIS COLLECTION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT. LOCAL PICK UP ONLY.

PEONIES CAN BE SHIPPED AS DORMANT ROOT STOCK ONLY WHEN AVAILABLE IN FALL AND WINTER.

Peonies are our passion! And from what we've heard from many of you, they are yours as well. Who of us doesn't have a fond childhood memory of these lovelies? Peonies are long-lived and require very little attention once planted.

Our peonies are sourced from around the world and brought to our fields where we tend them for both their beautiful flowers and for dividing to sell you roots to transplant into your own landscape! When we find particularly good types grown in pots, we will bring them in for you so you don't have to wait quite so long for your peonies to bloom in the garden.

With nearly 50,000 bare roots arriving to our nursery each year, they are the best way to economically expand your personal peony collection. Peony roots are dug and divided ONLY in the FALL of each year. So, most of the varieties you see in our collection are not ready for you until then. But, the wait is worth it! We can mail order them to you, or you can come in and we'll go over each root with you.

We encourage you to pre-order your selections so you can get your choices before they sell out. We try our best to ensure the bare root varieties we have listed for sale will be available in the upcoming fall. But, sometimes Mother Nature throws us a curve-ball and we may have to disappoint you by removing the item for that year. Be patient; We'll try again the following year!

Some of our varieties are rare, expensive, and in VERY limited quantities. We do not apologize for our pricing as by far most of our selections are very competitive given the robust size and health of our root stock. We sell robust 3/5-eyed roots unless noted otherwise. When you gasp at a price that seems outrageous, it is probably set for a reason that has nothing to do with quick sales. We search the world over to add new types and varieties each year, so don't stop looking!

We are happy to discuss quantity discounting, wholesale pricing, and special orders. Please call and ask for Liam. If he is unavailable (most likely), then please accept the courteous and helpful assistance of any of our associates.

If you are interested in LARGER QUANTITIES PER VARIETY, please ask us about discount pricing!

A NOTE ON SHIPPING: We have elected to offer shipping ONLY for BARE ROOT peonies at this time. There are many reasons for this decision, but the most important is that it's simply easier on the peonies themselves. Peonies as a group hate to be disturbed and pout for a few years following division or relocation. While the process of shipping through mail-order may not seem like much to us, to a potted peony it is very disturbing! Thus, one risks losing the advantage of a pot-grown elder and the significant expense involved in both shipping AND purchasing a matured plant.

This said, if you insist on us shipping you a potted specimen, we will do so. But, be forewarned that it is very likely it will take a year to recover to full-throttled happiness.

Our shipping prices are 'approximate' and likely overstated. In the event shipping is significantly less than what our algorithms add to your order, we will refund you the difference. We will NEVER increase your shipping costs to you.

A NOTE ON PLANTING BARE ROOT PEONIES:
Our BARE ROOT PEONIES SHIP LATE IN THE PLANTING SEASON! This is to maximize cool shipping weather and to ensure root dormancy at the time of planting. Please do not insist on early to mid-fall shipping even in colder climes. We will ship our peony roots to you when they are ready. This may mean November. We recommend preparing your planting site ahead of time so you can plant your roots immediately upon arrival. When your package arrives, OPEN IT IMMEDIATELY AND INSPECT YOUR ROOTS! While they are perfect when we pack them, lots can happen in a few short days of shipping. Let us know immediately if you have any quality concerns so that we can do our best to rectify any issues. Plant your carefully prepared root with the individual roots spread out as horizontally as possible and ensure the crown where the new shoots will grow is NO DEEPER than 2" below the ground surface in USDA HARDINESS Zones 2, 3, 4, and 5; 1" deep in Zones 6 and 7; and 1/2" deep Zones 8 and 9 for varieties listed for these warmer zones. If in doubt, err on the shallow side! If planted too deeply, your plants may never blossom. Once planted, firmly tamp the soil around the roots to ensure there are NO AIR POCKETS, then water thoroughly, and apply a thick layer of loose mulch in areas where the ground freezes. Do not disturb your planting once planted! In very-early spring when the ground loses its frost, remove the mulch from the crown area of the peony and leave it to surround the new plant. The crown needs to 'breathe'! Only water if there is prolonged dry weather. Do not allow your new peony to become waterlogged. There are few problems with growing peonies, but most of them begin with overly wet ground!

FIELD STOCK AVAILABILITY:
We field-grow tens-of-thousands of peonies which we use for our commercial cut-flower operation. These peonies are planted with close spacing rather than for the typical showiness of the home garden. Consequently, we need to thin out these rows as they mature to keep the crops healthy and fully productive. This creates an opportunity for you to buy a very large, mature root system! We offer these 'field stock' bare roots in the fall only, usually in September or October. The pricing reflects the size of the plant that you are buying and its matured age. You can leave the plant intact and replant it into your garden, or you can divide it into several smaller plants all of which will regrow over the ensuing 3-5 years to maturity. If you are interested in finding out if a selection is going to be available as 'field stock', drop us a line and ask. We will gladly let you know if we anticipate thinning that cultivar in the coming autumn.

Happy gardening!
