Hostas, also called plantain lilies, fell out of fashion for awhile. I'm not certain why because hostas are so easy to grow and once established, you can basically stop caring for them. I think their reputation as "deer salad" caused them some lost fans, but honestly, is that their fault?
Lots of new leaf colors and shapes have hit the market and if you're looking to brighten up a shady corner of the garden, then look no further. I love to see hostas planted in drifts that fade off into the woods. They help to make a natural transition from woodland to manicured garden like few other garden plants can. Hostas are also incredibly hardy, shade and moisture tolerant, and serve double-duty by having lovely scented flowering spikes.
