Dark pink. An outstanding woody peony for the garden, presenting 6"-7" deep pink-red blooms with lavender highlights and yellow stamens; great as an accent in the garden or massed in borders; unlike perennial peonies, remember not to prune this variety. Also known as 'Royal Dragon' Tree Peony. Hundred proliferate flower type. Flowers mid-season. Grows to 6' tall and 5' wide.
In Chinese culture the black dragon can have many meanings. It is most often associated with vengeance and stormy weather or emotion. However, the black dragon can have less volatile means like wisdom, knowledge, self-discovery, and a connection to ones ancestors. The dragon is traditionally an auspicious symbol of strength, power, good fortune, wisdom, success, protection, and masculinity.
The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (tree peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition.
USDA Zones 4-9 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches and you can expect them to blossom the first or second year after planting.
Zones 4-9
We do not ship potted peonies.
