'Chelan' cherries are known for their deep-red color and rich, juicy flavor, similar to the'Bing' cherry. Compared to 'Bing' cherries though, 'Chelan' cherry fruits earlier and is more likely to avoid split or fused cherries.
Cherry trees grow taller than other fruit trees, and 'Chelan' can reach 15 to 30 feet at maturity. In spring, it turns out a brilliant display of white and pink flowers. These abundant flowers transform into sweet, heart-shaped cherries with around 16 to 18 percent sugar content.
'Chelan' cherry is prized for their sweet richness when eaten fresh, baked in pies and desserts, dried, canned, or even turned into jam or preserves. This is a very versatile cherry and one of the most reliable for Northern orchardists.
USDA Zones 4-8. Can be successfully grown in Zone 3 with protection from spring frosts while flowering. Requires at least 500 chill hours.
Not Self-pollinating. Consider using 'Lapins', 'Sweetheart', or 'Bing' as a pollinator' for 'Chelan'.
Available in 7-gallon pot.
