'ELECAMPANE' Horse-heal (Inula helenium)

The 'Elecampane' comes with 50 organically certified seeds per packet. This herbaceous perennial is native to southern and central Europe. It prefers rich, sodden to moist garden or wayside soil in the sun to part shade. Sow in the spring, directly in a prepared garden bed or in pots. Barely cover seed, tamp in firmly and keep warm moist and in the light until germination, which occurs in about 12 days. Thin or transplant to 1 to 2 feet. They grow up to 5 feet tall. 

A beautiful garden perennial, the root of 'Elecampane' is used in traditional medicine. The tea made from the dry root is pleasant and purported to produce expectorant properties.
