With extra-large, baseball-size fruit, this variety was introduced to home gardeners in 1929 from the experimental station of Luther Burbank. Sometimes called a “blood plum” because of its dark-red flesh, 'Elephant Heart' fruit is juicy, flavorful, and excellent for eating fresh or for canning. Once established, these trees thrive in arid and semi-arid areas. Freestone. Ripens in September. This plum makes a stunning ornamental and will be a favorite for insects, bees, and spring migrant birds.
USDA Zone 5-9. Requires 700 chill hours.
Self-pollinating. Plant a second 'Elephant Heart' or a 'Santa Rosa' nearby to ensure best pollination and cropping.
Available in 7-gallon pot.
