'PATRIOT' Blueberry (Vaccinium x corymbosum 'patriot')
Vaccinium corymbosum, commonly known as high bush blueberry, is an upright, deciduous shrub native to eastern North America where it typically grows in moist woods, bogs, swamps and low areas. White, pendulous, urn-shaped flowers bloom in spring. The round, sweet berries are dark blue to purple with a dull, blue-grey bloom on their surface. The high bush blueberry is a valuable source of food for wild animals and is an important commercial and home garden crop worldwide.‘Patriot’ is a high bush blueberry cultivar which typically grows 4-6’ tall. Waxy, bell-shaped, white flowers appear in May. Flowers are followed by medium-blue blueberries which ripen in mid-season (late June). 'Patriot' is known for it's higher yield than many other high bush blueberries owing in part to the large size of each berry. Berries soften in hot weather conditions. Ovate, dark green leaves turn attractive shades of red and purple in fall.
