'ROYAL GALA' Apple (Malus x domestica 'royal gala'')
A cross between 'Golden Delicious' and 'Kidd's Orange Red', the 'Gala' apple is an introduction from New Zealand. The 'Royal Gala' is a simple 'sport' of the original 'Gala' having significantly more red skin than it's older namesake. In fact, in order to have the moniker 'Royal', at least 50% of the skin must be a uniform crimson red. The rest of the thin skin will likely by streaked with colorful hues of orange, pink, and yellow. This is a beautiful apple to behold!
Like with most apples, the proof is in the pudding, so they say. 'Royal Gala' does not disappoint having a sweet, fine textured, and aromatic bite. 'Royal Gala' has all but replaced the original 'Gala' in commercial production and has, for the first time in over 50 years, replaced 'Red Delicious' as the dominant apple in American commercial markets.
