'DOUBLE KING' Amaryllis (Hippeastrum x 'double king')
'DOUBLE KING' Amaryllis (Hippeastrum x 'double king')
Once of the most impressive double-flowered reds we've encountered, "DOUBLE KING" has fire-engine red petals each tipped with a spot of white. The two or even three rows of petals make the visual impact of this selection difficult to ignore. Hardier than old-world amaryllis, 'DOUBLE KING' can be grown outdoors to USDA growing zone 7 and reliably produce blossoms in summer year after year!
Grown in the Inca Valley of Peru, this selection has a shortened period needed to send up its flower stalks making blooming during the Winter Holidays a real option. Once planted and watered, Peruvian amaryllis take only 4-6 weeks to bud out and bloom! Typical Dutch amaryllis grown in the Northern Hemisphere usually require anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks to grow out from the bulb to bloom. The overall size of a Peruvian amaryllis bulb is slightly smaller than Dutch-grown bulbs, but the you get the same number of flowers in all the same gorgeous colors and forms!
Zones 7-11.
Once potted, maintain temps in the 70's and provide bright light throughout the day. An east or south-facing room interior is generally suitable. Low light will encourage elongated stems and leaves which may require staking.
