'BIG POWDER HEAD' Peony (Paeonia x lactiflora '大頭粉 da tou fen/big powder head')

大頭粉; Da Tou Fen; Big Powder Head.

'Da Tou Fen' is a large fragrant pink herbaceous hybrid peony from the city of Heze, (formerly named Caozhou), Shandong Provence, People's Republic of China. A very pleasant medium-pink hue enriches the voluptuous form of 'Da Tou Fen'. The translation from Chinese to English is difficult as the Chinese name is more a concept than a description of a tangible entity. Nonetheless, we think this translation captures the sense of open airiness this big girl presents. Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely selection from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition. 

USDA Zones 3-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
