'FUJI ORCHID' Peony (Paeonia x lactiflora '兰富士-Lan Fu shì/fuji orchid')

兰富士; 'Lán Fù shì'; 'Fuji Orchid'.

'FUJI ORCHID' or 'Lan Fu Shi' is a lavender-hued herbaceous hybrid peony from the city of Heze, (formerly named Caozhou), Shandong Provence, People's Republic of China. This region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (tree peonies) for over three thousand years! Herbaceous peonies are a relative new comer having earned their representation in this peony capital only a millenium ago! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition. The name 'Fuji Orchid' is as close an English version of the traditional Chinese hanzi 兰富士 as we can come. The orchid is referencing the flower's delicate pink color of blue washed pink. It is one of the 'lavender' class peonies. Exceptional.

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
