'ROYAL ELEGANCE' 岛锦 Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa 'dao jin/shima-nishiki/royal elegance)
岛锦; Dao Jin/Shima-Nishiki/Royal Elegance.
Hand-down our most popular Japanese tree peony 'Shima-Nishiki' is known as 岛锦 or 'Dao Jin' in Chinese and 'Royal Elegance' in English. This unusually colored tree peony exhibits very large, bi-colored, red flowers marbled with white and pink in late-spring. The blossoms have a nice light fragrance and appear on erect stems above deep-green foliage with an interesting deeply-divided texture. 'Shima-Nishiki' and is an ideal choice for any gardener who is looking for something a bit different. The gigantic 10-inch, semi-double flowers have a magical appearance with their flamboyant coloring of raspberry-red and pale-pink to white marbling held high on relatively low shrubs up to 4-feet tall and wide.
USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches. (Sun, 1978). Very limited quantity. We sell out early.
We do not ship potted peonies.

Plant arrived well packaged without damage.
Size was larger than expected and looks very healthy. Quality root stock for a bare root item. Will buy from again. Wanted to support veteran run American based company. Our Wisconsin tree and Itoh peony store is now gone.
Excellent rootstock!
Can't wait to get these in the ground to see them bloom. Tubers were sizable and looked very healthy. The shima-nishiki tree peony is impressive in size. I waited a long time to get this as it is expensive and it was worth the wait. Delighted with purchase.
