'PINK HIBISCUS' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa 'rou fu rong')

'景玉', 'Jing Yu', also known as 'Luster of Jade', has a 6-inch to 7-inch blossom that begins a pinkish-white and mature to white. This tree peony grows to 6-feet tall and 5-feet wide at maturity (20 years). In the city of Heze, (formerly named Caozhou), Shandong Provence, People's Republic of China this cultivar blossoms mid-spring. 'Jing Yu' is an upright, bushy, deciduous shrub with deeply-lobed, dark-green leaves divided into elliptic or ovate leaflets and large, sweetly-fragrant, fully-double, pink-flushed white flowers with raspberry striping. Synonymous with 'Xue Ta' and 'Sai Xue Ta'. The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition. (1978 introduction).

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches. (Sun, 1978).
