'RED SHANDONG LOTUS' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '鲁菏红-lu he hong')

'RED SHANDONG LOTUS' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '鲁菏红-lu he hong')

鲁菏红; Lu He Hiong; RED SHANDONG LOTUS.

'Lu He Hong', also known as 'Red Shandong Lotus' or 'Heze Red' has 6" to 7"blossoms of the Hundred Proliferate form.  Pinkish-red petals are purplish-red at the base.  Stalks are straight and relatively short supporting upright flowers. 'Red Shandong Lotus' is a vigorous bloomer. Flowers mid-season. A good mid-garden size at maybe 4' tall and 3' wide. The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition. (1968).

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches. (Sun, 1978).

We do not ship potted peonies.
