'BLUE SAPPHIRE' 蓝宝石 Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa 'lan bao shi/blue sapphire')

'BLUE SAPPHIRE' 蓝宝石 Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa 'lan bao shi/blue sapphire')

Lan Bao Shi; 蓝宝石; Blue Sapphire; Blue Jewel.

'Lan Bao Shi', also known as 'Blue Sapphire' or 'Blue Jewel' tree peony will grow to be about 6 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 6 feet. It has a low spreading canopy. It grows at a slow rate maturing in 15 to 20 years. This remarkable tree peony features bold, lightly-scented, pink to pale-lavender, cup-shaped, 6-inch blossoms with powder-blue overtones, butter-yellow stamen, and hot-pink petal flares from mid to late-spring. The flowers are excellent for cutting. The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition.

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches. (Sun, 1978).

We do not ship potted peonies.

Apparently Dead on Arrival

I ordered two tree peonies, High Noon and Blue Sapphire. Both look like, when they were alive, they were nice robust plants. Unfortunately, mine look like two sets of dead twigs. The buds for next year's growth are dried and shriveled on High Noon and there are no signs of life on the plant either above or below the apparent ground level. On Blue Sapphire, the above the ground buds are dried and shriveled but there are two sprouts coming from the lower roots that are each about an inch long which means the rootstock must have broken dormancy. They were not packed with any kind of material that would keep them from drying out. Instead, they were packed in old fashioned plastic grocery bags with a few dry wood shavings. Apparently, when they say the plants are shipped "bare root", they mean it. To make matters worse, there were no instructions included, only a packing slip.
