'THE SUN' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '太阳-tai yang')

'太阳', 'Tai Yang' tree peony, also known as 'Zhao Xia' or 'The Sun', features bold, lightly-scented, ball-shaped, magenta-red flowers with violet overtones and yellow eyes. Single blossoms are borne at the ends of the branches from mid to late-spring. The 8" to 9" flowers are excellent for cutting. It has attractive light green deciduous foliage. Slowly grows to about 5' or 6' tall and wide over 20 years. The narrow compound leaves are highly ornamental but do not develop any appreciable fall color.

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches.
