'TROPICANA' Peony (Paeonia x lactiflora 'tropicana')

Sensational 'TROPICANA' has semi-double flowers with three rows of guard petals, bright coral-pink in color (RHS N57-C). Flower form is similar to ‘Pink Hawaiian Coral’ but with more petals, while color is closer to that of ‘Cytherea’. Color does not fade as quickly as other corals thus as good a coral as any for more southern climes. One flower per stem with an occasional side bud. Stigmas are pink and showy, the same color as the petals and nestled at the center of a substantial tuft of golden-yellow stamen. Foliage emerges bronze and greens up with warm weather. Height 42-44 inches, with self-supporting thick stems. Good resistance to botrytis. A vigorous grower with good vase life, ‘Tropicana’ has great promise as a commercial cut-flower. It received “seedling of distinction” at the APS exhibition in Omaha in 2012. Still an uncommon variety difficult to source commercially, but in our opinion a difficult coral to beat.
