Introduced in 1981, ‘Avis Varner’ is a double, late-flowering peony with deep red-purple blossoms. The 36" stems are very firm and sturdy and if dis-budded do not need support. This peony is very suitable as a cut-flower peony in colder climates. It is scentless and a deeper-red than 'Felix Supreme' to which it is often compared. (Varner, 1981).
