'BURNING BRIGHT' Peony (Paeonia x lobata 'burning bright')
A single fluorescent pink-red lobata peony of exceptional poise and beauty. 34″ stems hold each early mid-season blossom in up-facing elegance. Petals are slightly crinkled and cup a corona of golden anthers. lightly fragrant. Per the APS, the unnamed seedling was obtained by Roy Leighton from Prof. Saunders in a non-blooming block of seedlings in 1940 then sold to Goldsmith in 1952. Peggy Goldsmith tagged is #179. It first bloomed in 1953. It was sold to Rogers (Caprice Farm Nursery) in 1978 and APS registered as 'Burning Bright' in 1986. Still quite rare to find offered for sale. (Saunders/Goldsmith/Rogers, 1986). Heirloom.
