'DARK JEWEL' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa 'zhu guang mo run')
'Zhu Guang Mo Run' has globular, double, 7" to 8" blossoms in dark-Red to black color with golden-yellow stamen when fully opened. Well deserving of its name, 'Dark Jewel' blossoms in the late-season which is unusual for tree peonies. Grows to 7 feet tall and 5 feet or more wide. Give 'Zhu Guang Mo Run' plenty of room to grow in your garden and you will be well rewarded. (Zhao Lou Heze, 1970)
The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition.
USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches and you can expect them to blossom the first or second year after planting.
We do not ship potted peonies.
