'SAFFRON' Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus sp.)

'SAFFRON' Saffron Crocus (Crocus sativus sp.)

Well-known for its culinary power, saffron has been traded across the Globe for millennia. Unlike our spring-flowering varieties, the 'Saffron Crocus' blossoms in the autumn bringing a joyful vision to the foundation border planting. These crocus are a bit more tender than our typical spring crocus, so consider them as a foundation planting on the south side of a building or as a tender bulb needing to be lifted and overwintered in the root cellar. The edible portion is worth its weight in gold! Unusual and difficult to source. Unknown in the wild. This only exists in cultivation after 3500 years of collecting, hybridizing, and trade. Corms multiply each year forming clumps of flowering autumn crocus. These can be divided to spread across the garden scape.

Zones 6-9 (treat as a tender bulb or mulch well near a south-facing building foundation.
