'SCILLA' Squill (Scilla sp)
'SCILLA' Squill (Scilla sp)
We carry two species of Squill; Meadow Squill (Scilla litardierei 'amethystina') and Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica 'alba'). The Meadow Squill var. 'Amethystina' has pyramidal, composite blooms of dark-lavender to royal-blue. It is more generally referred to as Dalmatian Squill in this country. It performs very well in a deciduous woodland setting with dappled light in hardness zones 4-9. It readily naturalizes and like most Scilla, can become invasive. The Siberian Squill that we carry is the white form or 'Alba'. It naturalizes easily in areas of full-sun or partial shade and is hardy from zones 3-8. Scilla are deer and rodent resistant.
All Scilla perform nicely as forced bulbs through the winter months. Keep them in your vegetable drawer in moist peat moss for 8 weeks. You can then bring them out a few at a time and enjoy a succession of indoor spring flowers all winter!
Bulbs are available for shipping in FALL only.
